Bacchae @Getty Villa Diary 2018.07.30
1st day of the 2nd week with 3 new faces in the room!
Aaron Poochigian: our Bacchae translater.
Eleni Kyriacou: costume designer from Greece.
Kelly Maurer: from SITI to help Chorus work (I mean, everything)
Today’s rehearsal was charged with energy and passion.
How lucky I am to work with these wonderful people in this artistic place on this difficult/tricky but important play!
Table work with Aaron
We, including Shelby Brown from Getty Villa (thanx), crammed in the green room. Made many changes & cuts in the script. Aaron has been open minded, quick and powerful. Amazing.
Training led by Akiko @theater inside
Suzuki:
up&down, slide 45 degree, Basic #3a, Stomping->Slowten (Darron West, sound designer, provided the cool music related with Bacchae), Standing Statues free style speaking Astrophic.
Viewpoints:
With sticks and benches.
14:25 – 15:00@theater inside (we’ll move to outside theater from Aug.1)
Staging the beginning of the play. Ellen Lauren led choreography with floor pattern. Assignment to her had come on Saturday. I wonder if she’d got proper rest on Sunday off… Anyways it was fun and everyone pitched in ideas. I love this company.
Break. I had lunch @picnic area with Nana Dakin (assistant director) under the beautiful California sky. I wanted to eat/chat with her more. 20minutes is kind of short 🙂
Continue to stage.
Then drove back to our residency via Topanga Canyon Blvd. Leon made the dinner; pork chop (sous vide), ravioli and sautéed veggies. Arigato.
I know, we know, this play is a monster in many ways. It’s about the Theatre. Ah Dionysus, let us keep exploring!
Love,
~akiko
